Ai piedi del vulcano

A metà tra mito e leggenda, si narra che il filosofo agrigentino Empedocle si sia lanciato nel cratere dell'Etna per convalidare la sua natura divina, ma sembra anche che la Montagna, per  smentirne la tracotanza,  abbia rigettato un suo calzare, ritrovato, successivamente, nella radura chiamata "Torre del filosofo", a 2900 mt di altezza.
Nei secoli l'Etna ha ispirato artisti  e letterati, da Virgilio a Ovidio, da Shakespeare a Milton, fino ad arrivare a Goethe che, durante il  Grand Tour, approdò a Catania, nel maggio del 1787 e, da qui, iniziò l'esplorazione del vulcano, per raggiungere i Monti Rossi, emersi  in prossimità di Nicolosi, dopo la violenta eruzione del 1669. Da questo punto di osservazione, lo scrittore tedesco potè ammirare e cantare in versi la bellezza del paesaggio circostante.
Con i suoi  3.340 metri s.l.m. e i 45 Km di diametro, l'Etna è il vulcano attivo più alto d'Europa, compreso tra le province di Catania e Messina,  la sua formazione risale a 600.000 anni fa, dal 2013  è  diventato  patrimonio dell'Unesco, con la seguente motivazione "I crateri della vetta, i coni di cenere, le colate e le grotte di lava, la depressione della valle del Bove fanno dell'Etna una destinazione privilegiata per la ricerca e per l'istruzione, esso continua ad influenzare la vulcanologia, la geofisica e le altre discipline della terra".

 L'avvicendarsi delle stagioni regala immense emozioni, dal foliage autunnale al candore del manto di neve, al rigoglio della nuova vita in primavera. La vecchia signora si diverte a stupire e affascinare i suoi ammiratori, ama  travestirsi, giocare con i colori, ma non può esserne descritta con uno solo, né con il bianco, né con il nero,  "Lei" sta nelle infinite sfumature dei due opposti.




 La sua voce possente, stentorea diventa, in certi momenti,  ruggito di fuoco, poi ritorna, improvvisamente, ad essere docile e pacifica, la sua parola si spegne nel silenzio di una notte stellata, ogni tanto uno sbuffo impaziente di fumo.

 Mite e immobile, osserva la vita che si dispiega davanti ai suoi occhi vigili e attenti, i pescatori di Acitrezza che  affidano le loro reti alla generosità del mare, gli artigiani  di Linguaglossa che forgiano il ferro in mille forme diverse, i contadini che arano e preparano il terreno per la semina, i vignaioli che potano le viti che daranno frutti prelibati, mondi paralleli  che avanzano nel loro cammino accanto alla frenesia e ai ritmi intensi  delle città vicine. 

La gente del posto ha un rapporto ambivalente con  il "Gigante di roccia e di lava", amore e timore si alternano e si sovrappongono, a seconda dei casi, ma il sentimento predominante che abita nei loro cuori è di ossequioso e totale rispetto. 

Per i Siciliani l'Etna è un concetto, un'astrazione mentale, indica un vasto territorio fatto prevalentemente di natura dura, spigolosa, ma anche di  vigneti centenari,  di vecchi palmenti, di eleganti dimore d'epoca, il Mongibello è luce, forza, energia pura.

Insolita e sorprendente la zona effetto jungle, un intreccio riuscito di palme, bambù, felci, ajughe, albizie,  cycas e tante altre varietà di piante paludose, sempreverdi, e perenni,  tra le cui foglie si annidano centinaia di piccoli uccelli che, con il loro allegro cinguettio, danno il benvenuto al visitatore. 

Il personale addetto alla reception è cordiale e premuroso, professionale senza mai apparire distaccato e formale. Noi abbiamo avuto il piacere di essere accolti dalla solarità  della bella e dolce Valeria che ci ha fornito tutte le informazioni su come vivere al meglio il  tempo della  nostra vacanza.

Il resort è dotato di un ristorante, diretto da due chef, Piergiorgio Alecci e Rosario Parisi, una sonata a quattro mani, un processo creativo dinamico,  aperto,  arte culinaria, tradizione e innovazione che si intrecciano, diventando lo specchio della  storia di DonnaCarmela, cura  della qualità, dell'armonia, la bellezza come educazione sentimentale.

Il maître di sala, Alessandro Mancuso, che è anche un raffinato sommelier, a dispetto della sua giovane età, possiede un importante bagaglio di conoscenze, si muove, con padronanza e consapevolezza del suo ruolo, tra i clienti, sempre pronto al dialogo e al confronto. Lo contraddistinguono la serietà e la passione per il suo lavoro, la disponibilità e la giusta carica di contagiosa simpatia.

Molte delle materie prime che vengono trasformate in cucina provengono dall'orto vicino, gli agrumi e la frutta dalle coltivazioni della famiglia Faro, ideatrice e promotrice di questo superlativo progetto.

Altra attività  della famiglia è la produzione enologica, l'azienda Pietradolce, 11 ettari di estensione, nasce nel 2005, in C.da Rampante e in C.da Zottorinoto, nel territorio di Solicchiata,  versante Nord dell'Etna, fra i 600 e gli 900 metri di altitudine. I vitigni autoctoni, allevati per lo più ad alberello, come  Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio e  Carricante, danno vita a vini dal carattere deciso, ricchi di corpo e struttura, dalla spiccata mineralità e sapidità, con note morbide e fruttate.

 Il Pietradolce Archineri Etna Doc, Nerello Mascalese in purezza, ha ottenuto il premio dei 3 Bicchieri-Vini d'Italia, mentre l'Etna rosso Vigna Barbagalli è stato eletto come il Miglior Rosso del 2015. Straordinaria l'immagine dell'etichetta che riproduce la "Donna-vulcano" elegante e forte, allo stesso tempo, simbolo delle caratteristiche del vino prodotto in cantina. 

Pietradolce è anche un pregiato olio di Nocellara Etnea, un fruttato medio-alto con bassa dose di acidità, presenta un retrogusto  piccante e leggermente amaro.

Halfway between myth and legend it is said that the philosopher of Agrigento Empedocles threw himself into the crater of Etna to validate his divine nature, but it also seems that the Mountain, to disprove its arrogance, has rejected his shoe, found later, in the clearing called Torre del filosofo, at 2900 meters of height.

Another activity of the family is the oenological production, the Pietradolce company, 11 hectares of extension, was born in 2005, in C.da Rampante and in C.da Zottorinoto, in the territory of Solicchiata, north of Etna, between 600 and the 900 meters of altitude.
