"E lui, Giovanni, portava un vestito di pelli di cammello e una cintura attorno ai fianchi, il suo cibo erano cavallette e miele selvatico" (Mt 3,1-12)
Secondo la tradizione evangelica, l'asceta della parola, Giovanni Battista, mentre attraversava il deserto della Giudea, nel suo abito da profeta, nell'essenzialità e semplicità del suo rigore mistico, si cibò di locuste e miele selvatico. Per cavallette o locuste ci si intende riferire alle carrube, frutto tipico dell'area mediterranea, l'espressione più caratterizzante della campagna iblea.
Un'altra leggenda vede Guglielmo II il Buono, re normanno, come protagonista. Guglielmo, impegnato in una battuta di caccia nei pressi di Monreale, si fermò a riposare sotto un albero di carrubo. Nel sonno gli apparve la Madonna che gli rivelò l'esistenza di un tesoro proprio sotto il tronco della pianta. Al suo risveglio, Guglielmo non esitò a far sradicare l'albero e, con grande stupore trovò davvero un'enorme quantità di monete d'oro, così ordinò subito di costruire, nel sito del ritrovamento, il Duomo di Monreale, gioiello dell'architettura normanna famoso in tutto il mondo, che fa parte dal 2015, del patrimonio UNESCO.
Al carrubo sono legate suggestive storie di fate ed entità soprannaturali che, in prossimità di questi alberi, consumavano segreti rituali e misteriose cerimonie, lanciando i loro incantesimi agli esseri umani, ignari e inconsapevoli.
Ma al di là della fantasia e immaginazione di cui si nutre la narrazione popolare, l'albero sempreverde del carrubo, il cui nome scientifico è "Ceratonia siliqua", appartenente alla famiglia delle Febacae, secondo alcuni studiosi, a quella delle Caesalpiniaceae, secondo altri, possiede delle eccellenti caratteristiche nutrizionali in termini di fibre e vitamine (vitamina A, B2, E, D2), di minerali come calcio, rame, potassio e manganese, di tannini, come acido gallico con poteri antiallergici, antisettici e antibatterici.
Il carrubo è una pianta rustica, poco esigente, che cresce bene in terreni calcarei, aridi e poveri, poco resistente alle gelate, sopporta meglio il clima caldo, proprio per tale motivo è una delle coltivazioni più diffuse della Sicilia, in particolare della zona tra Siracusa e Ragusa, dove ricopre l'80% della superficie coltivata su base nazionale.
L'etimologia del nome deriva dall'arabo "Kharrub", alcuni avanzano l'ipotesi che Ceratonia provenga dal greco e sia una parola composta da "κέρατο" (corno) e "κεραυνός" (fulmine), perché sembra che l'albero abbia avuto origine da un fulmine che colpì il corno di un toro.
Alcuni esemplari raggiungono dimensioni notevoli e godono di lunga vita, uno dei più longevi della nostra isola cresce, possente e solido, a Rosolini, in provincia di Siracusa, viene chiamato "Carrubo di Favarotto" e vanta almeno 2.000 anni d'età.
Dall'albero dalla "carne sanguinolenta", come lo definisce Guccione, si ricavano frutti allungati e dalla scorza esterna dura e spessa. Al loro interno si trova l'endosperma e i semi, che vengono definiti "carati" , costituivano l'unità di misura per il peso delle pietre preziose.
L'impiego della farina di carrubo ha trovato, nel tempo, larghi consensi nell'industria alimentare e nell'alimentazione animale. Per le proprietà addensanti e gelificanti viene utilizzata nei prodotti di pasticceria e gelateria. Può essere sostituita al caffè solubile, all'orzo e al cacao nella preparazione di bevande calde.
Dopo aver attraversato il mare oscuro dell'abbandono, il carrubo sta vivendo un periodo di rinnovato entusiasmo, non solo tra gli addetti ai lavori, ma anche da parte di coloro che lo utilizzano in altri settori.
Una delle ultime frontiere riguarda l'impiego della carruba in cosmetica, in particolare nella biocosmetica, termine composto da "κόσμος" che indica il cosmo e "βίος" vita, la traduzione più probabile sarebbe "mettere in ordine le cose", alludendo alla consuetudine dei greci che guardavano il cielo e osservavano l'ordine delle stelle e dei pianeti, respirando l'armonia dell'universo. Quindi biocosmesi indica quel processo che attira energia buona verso il nostro essere e il nostro corpo attraverso la cura della pelle, superando il valore puramente estetico inseguito fino ad oggi, per diventare l'atteggiamento con cui ci poniamo in ascolto della bellezza e della luce interiore, con uno sguardo colmo d'amore verso noi stessi e la natura che ci circonda.

By grasshoppers or locusts we mean the carob, a typical fruit of the Mediterranean area, the most characteristic expression of the Hyblean countryside.
Another legend sees William II the Good, Norman king, as the protagonist. William, engaged in a hunting trip near Monreale, stopped to rest under a carob tree. In his sleep, the Madonna appeared to him and revealed the existence of a treasure right under the trunk of the plant. Upon awakening, Guglielmo did not hesitate to have the tree uprooted and, with great amazement, he really found a huge quantity of gold coins, so he immediately ordered to build, on the site of the discovery, the Cathedral of Monreale, a jewel of architecture. Norman famous all over the world, which is part of the UNESCO heritage since 2015.
The carob tree is linked to evocative stories of fairies and supernatural entities who, in the vicinity of these trees, consumed ritual secrets and mysterious ceremonies, casting their spells to unaware and unaware human beings.
